Construction at Point Cabrillo Light Station
A new drinking water line is being installed, by State Parks, that will greatly expand the drinking water storage capacity at the Point Cabrillo Light Station State Historic Park. Construction for this improvement to our infrastructure is scheduled to begin on June 5, 2013 and will be completed no later then July 20, 2013. During this construction period, there will be intermittent closures and delays on Lighthouse Road. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause our visitors, but ask for your understanding as we complete this much needed improvement to our visitor serving facilities.
During the construction period, Monday thru Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, visitors may experience delays in driving down Lighthouse Road from the upper parking lot at the Visitor Center to the Light Station. These delays may range from several minutes to on very rare occasions an hour or more. Pedestrian access from the Visitor Center Parking Lot to the Light Station via the North Parking Lot Trail will not be affected.
The work for this project involves digging a trench from the water tank located just West of the Visitor Center to the South side of Lighthouse Road. Digging the trench or bore hole will then proceed West along Lighthouse Road approximately 3000 feet until it intersects with the existing water line to the South of the Head Lightkeepers House. A new water line will be laid in this trench which will enable connection of the 12,000 gallon storage tank near the visitor center to the water purification system.
When this work is complete the park's drinking water capacity and fire suppression capability will increase from 6,000 gallons to 18,000 gallons. This improvement will reduce the State Park Staff time needed to make potable water. The system will be gravity pressurized reducing the maintenance needs during power outages, and both bathrooms in the visitor center will be open with a significant reduction in the cost of water.
We thank you for your understanding during this construction period.
The PCLK Staff and Directors.
