Point Cabrillo Lighthouse at sunset

An Invitation to Join FOCL

As our centennial year approaches, we recognize that much has been done, much remains to be done and much must continue to be done in order to keep our coastal treasure preserved and open to the public for generations to come.

To date we have:

  • Restored the original 3rd. order Fresnel  lens and returned it to active duty as a Federal Aid to Navigation

  • Restored the Lighthouse

  • Restored the Blacksmith & Carpenter Shop,  "The Smithy"

  • Restored the Oil House

  • Restored the East Keeper’s House

  • Restored the Head Keeper’s House and outbuildings

  • Reconstructed the Kern's Brother Farm House to serve as the light station's  welcome center

  • Opened the Lighthouse Inn at Point Cabrillo

  • Created the Smithy’s ocean aquarium

  • Developed parking areas and trails to mitigate negative environmental impact

  • Increased the number of California’s species of special concern on the headland

  • Created the Lightkeeper's Museum in the East House

  • Developed an interpretative center in the Lighthouse building

  • Received the California Preservation Foundation’s 2007 State Design Award

  • Received the Governor’s Historic Preservation Award for 2007

We continue to:

  • Provide free public access to the Light Station

  • Care for the restored structures in our challenging marine environment

  • Conserve the natural landscape with bio-engineered erosion control, mitigation of invasive species and reintroduction of native species

  • Sponsor flora and fauna surveys

  • Expand our cultural collections and refurbish our educational exhibits

  • Provide Whale Festival activities including docent-led whale watching, history and ecology talks, and bird-watching tours

  • Create, provide materials for, and teach educational seminars for school field trips – last year 860 children and 220 adults participated

We need to:

  • Complete the restoration of the Light Station to its original state, which includes finishing the work begun on the West Keeper’s House, and the historical reconstruction of the lost barn and water tower

  • Restore the original Keeper’s Gardens and Queen Anne Fences

  • Maintain and expand our public access and interpretive programs

  • Continue to preserve the land and its historic structures

The Friends of Cabrillo Light, FOCL, was established as a membership organization to help generate the funds necessary to continue all of this important work. Please join and become a charter member of FOCL. Participate with us in the ongoing effort to keep our award-winning historical site  beautiful for generations to come.

We believe in the words of John Ruskin, 19th century art critic and esteemed founder of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings:

"Take proper care of your monuments, and you will not need to restore them … Watch an old building with an anxious care; guard it as best you may, and at any cost …"
