Please Help Us Keep the Historic Name "Point Cabrillo Light Station"
The State Parks Recreation Commission will hold a public meeting at the Fort Bragg Town Hall on Friday May 16th, at 9:00 am. A major item on the meeting’s agenda will be to approve a new official name for the Point Cabrillo Light Station and Preserve. State Parks staff is recommending to the commission that the site be named “Point Cabrillo State Historic Park.” You are invited to attend that meeting and express your opinion about the sites name, or you can express your opinion to State Parks through the below email links.
On Feb. 28th State Parks held a public meeting to gain community input concerning the sites name. At that meeting, the Point Cabrillo Lightkeepers Association (PCLK) recommended to State Parks the name “Point Cabrillo Light Station State Historic Park.” The majority of people attending that meeting expressed support for the PCLK suggested name. The PCLK believe the words “Light Station” should be a part of the name for the following reasons:
1.
Point Cabrillo Light Station is the historic name that has been in common usage
since 1909 when the light station was built.
2.
Point Cabrillo Light Station is how the site is named in the National Register
of Historic Places and we believe the state name should be consistent with the
national name.
3.
The existence of the Light Station at Point Cabrillo is the primary reason the
site is historic.
4.
There are a number of historic sites in California that are named after Juan
Cabrillo, the light station is what makes the Mendocino site unique.
5.
The words Light Station in the name describe what is the most important
historical feature of the site.
